Limit of detection and limit of quantification

I am trying to map these 2 data elements so that they can be included in standard data exchange formats (rather than using a proprietary csv file) with its related attributes:

#1 Expression of Detection Capability (with units and type) and the definition I am working with: A numeric value that indicates the lowest possible analyte concentration in the sample that the test can detect but not necessarily be quantitated.
These are the types of capability limit, with these choices (not sure what the differences really are):
IDL = https://www.allacronyms.com/IDL/Instrument_Detection_Limit: The minimum concentration of an analyte that can be reliably detected but not necessarily quantified under the stated experimental conditions
MDL = https://www.allacronyms.com/MDL/Method_Detection_Limit: The lowest concentration of a substance that can be reliably detected but not necessarily quantified in a sample.
LOD = https://www.allacronyms.com/LOD/Limit_Of_Detection: The lowest concentration of a substance that can be reliably detected but not necessarily quantified in a sample

#2 Expression of Quantification Capability (with units and type) and the definition I am working with: A numeric value that indicates the lowest analyte concentration that can be measured with a known uncertainty.

These are the types of capability limit, with these choices (to me these definitions are not much different):
LOQ = https://www.allacronyms.com/LOQ/Limit_of_Quantitation: The lowest concentration of an analyte that can be reliably quantified using a specific analytical method.
PQL = https://www.allacronyms.com/PQL/Practical_Quantitation_Limit: The lowest concentration of a substance that can be reliably measured by an analytical procedure.
LLOQ = https://www.allacronyms.com/LLOQ/Lower_Limit_of_Quantification: The smallest concentration of a substance that can be reliably quantified in a given analytical method
MQC = unsure what this means

We do have these existing LOINCS:
LOINC 87706-8 Laboratory device Detection limit = Laboratory device Detection limit (but it is not specified if upper or lower limit - the structured numeric answer would support both
LOINC 101128-7 Theoretical limit of detection [#] in Specimen by calculation = Theoretical limit of detection [#] in Specimen by calculation - not sure if this one applies to any of these

And we have some component specific LOINCs that indicate detection limit (assume the lower limit of detection) for example:
LOINC 41516-6 HIV 1 RNA [Log #/volume] (viral load) in Serum or Plasma by Probe with amplification detection limit = 1.9 log copies/mL = HIV 1 RNA [Log #/volume] (viral load) in Serum or Plasma by Probe with amplification detection limit = 1.9 log copies/mL
LOINC 49041-7 Testosterone [Mass/volume] in Serum or Plasma by Detection limit <= 1.0 ng/dL = Testosterone [Mass/volume] in Serum or Plasma by Detection limit <= 1.0 ng/dL

Any thoughts on how to best proceed with a submission for these concepts?

Hello Riki,

I am going to forward this to the Lab LOINC list-serv for greater visibility. They are excellent questions.
