Answer LOINC Codes for QM 117-Diabetic Eye Exams

For 2026 QM117 for diabetic eye exam results is requiring one of the following answer LOINCS to get numerator credit: LA34399-8, LA34398-0, LA18648-8, 18646-2, LA18645-4, LA18644-7, LA18643-9.

I see these Answer LOINCs are associated to results LOINC 105914-6 -Eye Diabetic retinopathy screening Autonomous artificial intelligence.

How do answer LOINCS work within a result LOINC?

I am not sure I entirely understand the question.

The Result LOINC is asking a question, which in the case of 105914-6 |
Eye Diabetic retinopathy screening Autonomous artificial intelligence | the question is essentially “Did the FDA-cleared autonomous artificial intelligence software that analyzes retinal fundus images to detect the presence or absence of more than mild diabetic retinopathy find anything”?

The LOINC answer list values are the three potential response values from the software.

    • LA34398-0 | ETDRS Level 20 or lower, without macular edema|
    • LA35099-3 | ETDRS 35 or higher and/ or macular edema |
    • LA34400-4 | Insufficient image quality to support autonomous analysis|

In an HL7 message, the response the OBR segment allows for a codified result value which means the machine should return the LA code in addition to response text value.
